Chimney Service Across Michigan

Michigan spans two peninsulas and roughly six degrees of latitude, and a chimney in Monroe County and one in Keweenaw County are not doing the same job. The heating season in the western Upper Peninsula runs months longer than it does along the Ohio border, and snowfall between the two differs by an order of magnitude.

That is why this site is organised by county rather than treating the state as one service area. What a chimney here needs depends on which Michigan it is standing in.

What Changes From County to County

Three things vary most. The first is heating fuel: wood is primary heat across much of the north and the Upper Peninsula, and supplementary or decorative across the southern tier, which changes how fast creosote builds and how often a flue needs sweeping. The second is moisture load – lake-effect snow along the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior shores keeps masonry saturated for months, while inland counties dry between storms.

The third is housing age. Flint, Bay City, Hillsdale and the Copper Country carry large stocks of pre-1950 housing with flues built for coal, and those chimneys are usually oversized for whatever is venting through them now. Newer subdivisions across the southern and central counties carry factory-built metal systems instead, which fail differently and are repaired differently.
