Livinston County Chimney
Cleaning (248) 895-7752
Chimney
cleaning is the removal of dangerous creosote build-up on the
inside of the chimney. These deposits are highly flammable and are
the cause of a great many chimney fires. If you want to know
whether or not your chimney needs to be cleaned you should hire a
local chimney sweep and have a proper 24 point chimney inspection
performed. For those do-it-yourselfer's who have acquired the
necessary chimney cleaning tools and want to inspect and clean their
own chimney, this is how you begin.
The first step in the chimney cleaning
in Livingston county, and chimney inspection process is to open the
chimney damper and inspect that it is opening and closing freely.
Once you have opened the chimney damper look into the area above the
damper, this is called the chimney smoke shelf. Make sure the walls
of the smoke shelf are free from creosote deposits and do not have a
layer of soot on the interior walls more than a quarter inch thick.
Next go to the top of your chimney and look to see if there is any
creosote build-up on the inside of the chimney flue.

If you or your chimney sweeping
professional have determined that your chimney is in need of a good
cleaning you then want to secure the opening of the chimney
fireplace. Chimney cleaning and the cleaning of your chimney is not
a very difficult process in and of itself. The need for a chimney
cleaning expert and necessity to hire a chimney sweep comes in
ensuring that the job is done in a clean and neat manner. In order
to ensure a neat cleaning of your chimney drop clothes should be laid
in front of the fireplace opening. Once the damper on the chimney is
open and the drop cloths are spread out, then tape into place a clear
plastic sheet over the fireplace opening to ensure no dust ends up on
your flooring or furniture. Once you have secured the fireplace area
you can then begin cleaning your chimney.

The next part of the chimney cleaning
process is to gather your chimney cleaning brushes and rods.
Carefully move towards the top of the chimney and make sure that you
have a firm footing. If you are working off of a ladder or scaffold,
be sure they are properly set up and secure. Attach your chimney
cleaning brush to your chimney cleaning rod. Chimney cleaning rods
are typically 48 inches and are made up of flexible composite
material.
Insert your chimney cleaning brush into
the opening of the chimney flue liner and rigorously brush up and
down. Once you have cleaned your first 4 ft. section of the flue
liner attach your next chimney cleaning rod into place and work the
brush further down the chimney flue liner. Continue attaching
chimney cleaning rods and rigorously brushing the inside of the
chimney flue to remove creosote deposits until you have reached the
chimney smoke shelf. Once all of the debris from the chimney flue
liners have been knocked down onto the damper and into the chimney
fireplace, use your shop vac to suction up all of the soot and ash.
Take the end of your shop vac hose and
work it through the damper and into any ash piles resting on the
damper opening, and any other nook and crannies in the smoke shelf.
Take a wire brush and rigorously scrub the smoke shelf walls. Please
note you may not be able to see into the damper as you are cleaning
it. This is where video chimney inspection or use of a mirror can be
quite handy. Once you have brushed and vacuumed out all of the soot
and ash you can then begin to clean up your work area.

Roof Protection during Chimney Repair
Demolition of a chimney by its nature
can be a very messy process. The removal of spalled brick, chipped
brick, and loose, cracked concrete on the chimney crown inevitably
will lead to dust and debris falling on your roof or shingles during
masonry repair. When laying brick, the bricklayer spreads the mortar
onto the brick and excess mortar can fall onto your roof shingles.
Once the mortar hardens it can remove the granules from your roof
shingles, leading to wear and tear on your roof. That is why when
chimney repair, masonry restoration, chimney crown replacement, or
chimney crown repair is performed on your chimney it is imperative to
protect your roof in the chimney construction area.
You can use various items to protect
your roof during chimney crown demolition and chimney crown repair.
Items I have used to protect the roof on chimney repair and chimney
restoration projects include drop cloths, carpet remnants, rubber
mats, cardboard, and poly tarps. The more extensive the chimney
demolition and chimney construction project, the more layers of drop
cloth and/or carpet are required. I find using carpet remnants to be
the best method. The carpet does not have the tendency to slide on
roof shingles on small projects, only one layer is necessary. Poly
tarps are only good for small chimney repair projects. They are
lightweight, which makes them more susceptible to breezes that you
encounter when doing chimney repair. They provide protection from
falling mortar, but will do little against falling debris that is
encountered during chimney crown removal, large chimney crown repair,
and chimney brick replacement.
Once your chimney repair has been
completed and the protective covering surrounding the chimney has
been removed any loose particles and dust should be brushed from the
shingles with a soft brush and whenever possible, the roof should be
washed down. Warning: use of chemicals such as muriatic acid and
some concrete removers/detergents can also damage your shingles.
Once you have rinsed the roof off, be sure to clean out your gutters.
Nobody wants a gutter full of concrete after getting their chimney
repair completed. Remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a
pound of cure.
